Djavolja Varos, Serbia
About two hundred oddly-shaped columns make up Djavolja Varos. This is Devil’s Town, the name reflecting the strange natural formations, the highly acidic red water and most-importantly the haunting sounds. When the wind picks up, errie sounds can be heard as the wind whistles between the columns; sounds that feature in local legends.
These hoodoos are 2-15m high. They are natural formations formed from volcanic rocks sculpted into earth pillars by erosion – the caps on the top preventing the columns from completely disintegrating.
Location and logistics
To hear these formations you need to visit on a windy day (map). Website with more information on visiting.
