In recent decades, the atmospheric sounds of trains from a bygone era have been brought back to life. Around Britain more than a hundred old steam railways have been renovated by dedicated enthusiasts. And the sound of these trains, the chuffing of the steam engines and the blasts on the whistles, are an important part of the experience.

I’ve don’t find old engines particularly appealing, but vast numbers of people would disagree. Studies have shown that visitors to the British countryside like a nostalgia-tinted experience, and the sounds of heritage railways certainly provide that.
